Body Positivity Movement
All body types are made different, but all body types are meant to be loved and celebrated. As we grow and get older, we develop into different body shapes, whether that be having a thinner build, a muscular build, or having a fatter build.
Growing up in a society where certain bodies are celebrated more than others definitely puts a lot of pressure on someone. Scrolling through social media and seeing similar pictures posted but of smaller build bodies makes us, as plus size women, feel a little bit more pressure and insecurities than we should.
Staying positive about who we are and how we look is extremely important in finding our self-love. In more recent years, we have been fighting the way society sees plus size people. We have started the body positivity movement. The movement is all about reshaping society’s norms. It is a fight for inclusivity, self-love, and appreciation.
If you have been on any social media, then you have probably already seen the body positivity social movement and the many body positivity campaigns. If you have ever asked yourself, “ What is body positivity?”, or, “How to be body positive?”, then you are in the right place. Body positivism is extremely important and should be a part of who we are. Let’s jump into the world of body positivity.
Why is body positivity important?
Not being satisfied with your body plays a big role in having low self-esteem. When we are happy with our bodies and love how we look, our self-esteem increases. Sometimes having low self-esteem, can play a role in depression as well. It is very important to practice body positivity and make sure you remember that your body is just as beautiful as anyone else’s.
Sometimes, with body dissatisfaction comes eating disorders. We can get so caught up with what we see on social media and start to compare ourselves to what we see, that we start to believe we need to look a certain way to be beautiful. However, that should never be the case, we shouldn’t have to turn to eating disorders to feel beautiful.
Although sometimes eating disorders can be an outcome of body dissatisfaction, we want you to remember just how amazing your body is.
A great body positivity definition is that body positivity is a way to help people understand how social media plays a role and how we view our bodies and the relationship we have with our bodies.
Not only that, but social media also plays a role in how we view food, exercise, health, and self-love. Body positivity can mean many different things, including the appreciation of our bodies, confidence, acceptance of our bodies, and self-love. With aging, pregnancy, and lifestyle choices, our bodies tend to change and that is okay. The movement is all about making sure we love ourselves and all are different forms and shapes.
The body positivity movement targets anyone and everyone and aims to increase self love among everyone. Body positivity isn’t just about our size and body shape; though, it is also about race, gender, sexuality, and disability. Judgments are not only made about body shape and size, they are also made about race, gender, sexuality, and disability.
Although there may be negative judgments made, it should be noted that you are beautiful. You should never be made to feel as if you are not just as beautiful as anyone else, no matter your gender, race, sexuality, disability, or body type. No matter what you are beautiful. If you feel like you are healthy and you look good, then that is all that should matter, no one else’s opinion should play a role in how you view yourself.
